On May 29, 1879 a fire broke out on the first floor of the Washington House. There were 65 registered guests and 5 staff. All escaped except J.E. Troxell of Cumberland. F.B. Snivelly of Shady Grove, PA died later from his burns. The hotel was destroyed, as were the businesses located there - Adams Express, the Hartle Saloon, McComas Harness Manufactory and Hoffman and Eyerly Dry Goods Store (Clingan, 2005)

W.L. Hays' store next door was not destroyed. The signs for Books, Notions and Bibles were still on display.
