The Hagerstown Railway was incorporated in 1896. The first cars ran from Hagerstown to Williamsport in August 1896, and a route down South Potomac later in August and the Loop around Hagerstown, including West Washington Street, was started in September, 1896. In 1897 service to Funkstown was added, and in 1902 to Boonsboro (Harwood, 1970).

The Central Drug Store and Chas. E. Baldwin's Cigar Manufacturing Company are located on the Square.
