limestone and are exceedingly smooth, affording a splendid surface for wheelsmen. In fact, Hagerstown is a favorite resort of bicyclers, and there is a large club in the town with an immense building for exercising in during bad weather and for other purposes of the club.

No town can boast of finer livery stables. It is famous in that regard, and the admirable roads and streets makes driving a popular diversion.

The town is supplied with water from the breast of South Mountain. The Water Company is a private enterprise, regulated to some extent by the town, which controls its rates and contributes $1,000 a year to it for the use of water for fire purposes.
The source of the water is a number of springs on the side of the South Mountain, in an uninhabited district, and free from any possibility of serious contamination. These springs are conducted into a reservoir of a capacity of seventy millions of gallons. Thence it is conducted to the town through large iron pipes of great capacity, equal to nearly 50,000 gallons per hour. The reservoir is 249 feet higher than the town, so that the pressure is enormous, equaling about 80 pounds to the square inch— sufficient to force the water into a engine boiler against a great pressure of steam.
The water is soft and pure and the water rents are remarkably moderate.
