In the President's Antietam Battlefield address the Civil War is referred to as the "War between the States," a term that does not adequately or intelligently comprehend that regrettable conflict and one being propagandized by partisan Southern writers and speakers would minimize the error of secession.

The President further sectionalized the war when he referred to the reconstruction period as "bitter to the South" and "bitter to the North." The writer would suggest that "the North" hardly includes of the balance of the Union. The people of the Middlewest were no more "Northerners" than the loyal people of western Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee who supported the Union.
