Antietam Veteran Finds Pal’s Grave After Long Hunt
Special Dispatch to The Post
Sharpsburg, Md., Sept. 14.

An aged man tottered into battlefield headquarters in the Antietam National Cemetery this afternoon and asked for the superintendent.

“I want to look for the grave of my buddy that I believe is here," he told Capt. John Kyd Beckenbaugh, superintendent.

He explained that he was Sampson Main, 90 of Richland, Mo. A member of Company H. Coles Cavalry during the Civil War and that he had come east for the National Antietam celebration and also to hunt for the grave of his buddy, Peter Lapole, a member of the same cavalry.

Battlefield Guide Thomas Loy was assigned to the veteran and they walked up row after row of the nearly 5,000 headstones. Finally, far back in the cemetery when failure appeared likely they came upon Lapole's grave.

"I am contented now,'' Main confided to his guide.
